Art and Design Vision statement
At Holly House school, we endeavour to harness the power of art and design to enhance students learning experiences and help them to develop as individuals.
We understand the transformative effect that engaging with the expressive arts can have on individuals and communities. We aim to provide students the opportunity to broaden their understanding of themselves and the world around them.
We want engaging in art and design to enable our students to explore ideas, be self-reflective, to embrace mistakes, take creative risks, explore and develop and understanding of different cultures and work imaginatively; embracing the new and unknown.
Intent
At Holly House, the Art and Design classes will engage, inspire and challenge students. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to invent and experiment, to create their own pieces of artwork. They will be encouraged to critically evaluate their work and the work of others, gaining further understanding and appreciation of art and design.
Implementation
Students will be given the opportunity and encouraged to use different media for example: pencil, pastels, paint, fabrics and a range of 3D mediums through the curriculum delivery. They will have termly topics to experiment with different media and develop mastery skills and confidence in using them. Students will understand the importance of a sketchbook, to tell the story of their ideas. They will study a range of artis and art movements and build an understanding of historical and cultural developments linked different art forms. Pupils will have opportunities discuss the work of different artists and evaluate the merits of different art movements, helping them form their own opinions and appreciation of art and design.
Impact
There will be continual assessment of the students’ progress. Skill strengths and areas of development will be monitored to dictate future learning and projects. Students will have confidence in their skills and knowledge, enabling them to express themselves creatively. Pupils are given the opportunity to gain knowledge and appreciation of artists and art and design movements - in turn developing their cultural capital. Pupils will be able to express their opinions on various aspects of art and have a love for creativity, that they can pursue and share with others in the future.
